This series is a topical study looking at what the Bible has to say about our conscience. Many Christians don’t actually realize that the conscience is a faculty that works apart from the Holy Spirit. But our conscience can actually be wrong, leading us to have peace about things we shouldn’t, and feeling guilt about things we don’t need to. This is why it’s important to understand how the conscience works. It will help us in making godly decisions, and it will help us to love God and others well!
Lesson 1 - What is the Conscience?
In this lesson, we get an introductory look into this topic of the conscience, by defining it, seeing what the Bible says it can be, and understanding what it is for. The main takeaway we need to understand is that our conscience is not without error. It can lead us astray if it is not calibrated to be aligned with the truth of God’s Word.
Lesson 2 - Conscience vs. The Holy Spirit
In this lesson, we dive a little deeper into the difference between the conscience and the Holy Spirit. If we feel “led” toward something, is that the Holy Spirit, the conscience, or maybe just desires? How do we discern which it is? We search the Scriptures.
Lesson 3 - Making Godly Decisions
In this lesson, we talk about what it looks like to calibrate our conscience, bringing our understanding of right and wrong under the authority of God’s Word. Then we talk about how that can look with a biblical framework for decision making.
Lesson 4 - Dealing With Doctrinal Disagreements
In this lesson, we talk about what Christian liberty is, and how to think about different tiers of importance when it comes to truth, preferences, and opinions. Ultimately, we must adopt a framework that thinks biblically and displays love toward others.
