This sermon series was originally preached during the Christmas season. It is a sermon study covering the first two chapters of the book of Luke, and is the first sermon study in a series of studies through the entirety of Luke. In this specific study, we look and see how the Christmas story is not a moment where God just acts randomly. It is the moment we get to see what God has been doing throughout all of history. It’s when the promises, prophecies, and shadows of the Old Testament become a reality of God’s presence here on earth, to bring about the salvation of mankind!
Luke 1:1-25 - Silent, But Not Absent
In this message, we see that from the waiting of a barren couple to the preparation for the coming of Christ, this passage shows us that Christmas was not a sudden event. It was the fulfillment of promises God had been keeping all along. In this sermon, we see three powerful truths: Even when God is silent, He sees His people. Even when God seems quiet, He hears our prayers Even when answers are delayed, God is working behind the scenes.
In this message, we take a look at the announcement from Gabriel to Mary about how God was going to miraculously cause her to conceive with a child, even though she was a virgin. And this child was to be the Messiah! But what empowered her for this task? And what motivated her to obey and praise the Lord for what He had done? It was grace. God’s grace!
Luke 1:26-56 - How Grace Shapes Our Response
In this message, we look at when John the Baptizer was born. It was a miracle for Zechariah and Elizabeth to finally have a son! But what Zechariah celebrates is even bigger than a miracle son. He celebrates what the birth of his son means—that God is coming to visit His people to rescue them!
Luke 1:57-80 - Why John’s Birth Matters
In this message, we look at some of the most well known details of the Christmas story—the birth, the shepherds, and the manger, and see what they tell us about the gospel. Then we look at some of the first things that Mary and Joseph did to follow the commandments in the law. All of what we see points us to truths of the gospel! Jesus came to rescue us at just the right moment, being obedient to the law and living the life we could never live for ourselves so that His death could pay the debt we could never pay.
Luke 2:1-38 - The Gospel According to Christmas
In this message, we look at the only account of Jesus’ upbringing and development as a young child. It’s a story where He goes with His parents to Jerusalem for the feast of Passover. Through the account, we learn something amazing about our Savior. He humbled Himself to be limited to human development—intellectually, physically, spiritually, and socially. And we learn some great application for how we grow as Christians.
Luke 2:39-52 - How Jesus Grew (And How He Grows Us)
We hope that this series has been encouraging for you to see how God fulfills His promises from the Old Testament by giving us the presence of His Son!
