Why We Need Jesus

This sermon study is a continuation of our full study in the book of Luke, where we focus in on chapters 8 through 11. In it, we find Jesus on display for the disciples (and us) to see. And we evaluate whether we are truly beholding our Savior, seeing Him clearly.

How Is Your Heart’s Hearing? - Luke 8:1-21

In this message, we learn from Jesus, who is teaching His followers about hearing the Word of God rightly, with our hearts. It’s a message about how receptive our hearts are to God’s Word, when it speaks into our lives. Are we cultivating our hearts soil so that we receive the seed of God’s Word, and grow to bear much fruit?

See What Jesus Can Do - Luke 8:22-56

In this message, we see Jesus step into four situations with authority and power. Each one shows people in circumstances that are out of control, out of resources, or out of hope. And yet, none of these limit Jesus! His power and authority can work in ANY circumstance. Because that is true, each of us can learn to trust Him!

Joining Jesus in the Work - Luke 9:1-17

In this message, we see Jesus send out the disciples to do ministry themselves. And when they get back, they end up in a situation where Jesus invites them again to be a part of the work that He is doing. And we learn some truths about what happens when we join Jesus in the work that He is doing.

Beholding Our Savior - Luke 9:18-36

In this message, we listen in on conversations that Jesus is having with His disciples. They are beginning to understand who He is more clearly. However, they are still misunderstanding His purpose and mission. So Jesus takes time to explain to them that He will have to suffer, die, and rise again on the third day. The situations in this passage cause us to evaluate whether we are seeing Jesus clearly by asking ourselves four questions about His identity.

Distracted Discipleship - Luke 9:37-62

In this message, we look at a few times where the disciples completely miss what Jesus is doing and saying, because they are distracted with their own greatness, their own security, and their own sense of justice. As we look at it, we evaluate ourselves, and whether we are also living out “distracted discipleship.”
